Students Champion Emergency Response at UNC Charlotte
UNC Charlotte is currently witnessing a notable initiative spearheaded by graduate and undergraduate students aiming to establish a student-run Emergency Medical Services (EMS) program on campus. This movement seeks to enhance the speed and efficiency of emergency response, demonstrating the commitment of its students to safety and community welfare.
A Personal Mission
Davida Ogbar, a graduate student and certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), shares her motivation for entering the medical field. Her family experiences inspired her to learn how to better support her sister, who has special needs. Ogbar emphasizes, “I wanted to learn how to support them in emergencies.” This personal connection adds depth to the initiative, reflecting the genuine care students have for one another.
Collaboration and Community
Partnering with fellow student and senior biology major Nick Maynard, the duo is tapping into their backgrounds in emergency services to create an impactful resource for the campus community. "We want this to be a program that outlives us," Maynard states, highlighting the long-term vision they hold for the project.
Building Support for the Initiative
The Student EMS Initiative has already garnered substantial support from the student body, collecting over 500 signatures through both online and in-person efforts. This endeavor reflects a significant portion of the student community's interest in ensuring swift emergency responses. “We’ve noticed a lot of these signatures are from younger students who are still going to be here for a couple of years,” Ogbar observes, underscoring the initiative’s potential for sustainability.
A Call to Action
As the Student EMS Initiative continues to grow, the need for further community engagement and support remains vital. Interested individuals are encouraged to participate, whether it be through signing petitions or educating others about the importance of on-campus emergency services. Together, the UNC Charlotte community can foster a safer environment for all.
